Budget Beauty: New in from Maybelline

A few weeks ago I got an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Maybelline Make it Happen x Riga Fashion Week event, which saw a presentation of the brand's new empowering campaign, an introduction to the new beauty releases, some backstage makeup magic and, finally, a grand fashion show of the colourful and oh-so-quirky Latvian brand QooQoo. If you follow me on

, you might have already seen a sneak peek of the goodie bag with some of the upcoming additions to the Maybelline makeup lineup. After having a proper play with them on an almost daily basis, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the newbies, which are bound to hit the drugstore shelves sometime soon.

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream with Soy Extract*

Hailed as an 8-in-1 skin perfector, this version of the Maybelline BB cream is infused with soy extract, which is said to be a potent antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory agent. Usually, these types of extra ingredients have no effect on the condition of the skin - this case was no exception. The BB cream itself provides light coverage with a seamless, skin-like finish, visibly brightening and evening out the skin tone. The problem? You have to have the

right skin

to wear it - an undermoisturized base will result in a mask-like finish, while a heavier layer of cream underneath will turn it into a greasy mess within a few hours after application.

Maybelline Colossal Go Chaotic Volum' Express Mascara*

A deviation from the usual volumizing offerings of the Volum' Express range, the new Go Chaotic mascara is designed to provide a purposefully messy twist to an everyday look. Think slightly smudged, clumpy and spidery lashes. When applied in zig-zag motions, the densely packed mascara brush along with the wet formula provides a truly chaotic, clumpy look, however traditional application results in a daytime-appropriate volumized effect. If you like to embrace your inner 90's kid with the help of a brown lipstick rather than spidery lashes, I'd give this one a pass, mostly due to the wet and smudge-proof formula.

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick*

A classic lipstick at its finest, the Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick combines the best of tone and texture, coating the lips with a buildable and nourishing layer of color. Offering a semi-shiny finish, it wears off beautifully throughout the day, leaving behind an even, subtle stain. As for the color, Hollywood Red is a very wearable red hue with a tinge of hot pink. This shade turned out to be a pleasant surprise, as it's not something I would have picked for myself, yet I've grown to love this less intimidating take on the bright lipstick trend. Did I mention that it smells like a vanilla-glazed Cinnabon? (

though this might be yet another case of nocturnal munchies...

)

Maybelline Master Contour*

While I highly doubt that anything could ever surpass the

Illamasqua's Cream Pigment in Hollow

, this Maybelline Master Contour is something that immediately peaked my interest. Housed in a convenient wind-up tube, this creamy and blendable duo is meant to be simply striped in the hollows of the cheeks, and then blended out, allowing for a quick and fuss-free face shaping. Though I have the shade Medium, which is way too dark and warm for my paper-white face, the shade itself doesn't have a distinct orange undertone. With some expert maneuvering, I've been able to mix in the lighter shade, thus creating something akin to a natural shadow. I'd call this an entry level contouring product (

if you're able to get your mitts on the right shade

), which will work perfectly for those who aren't ready to seriously commit to face shaping, yet are curious about its seemingly limitless possibilities.

Have you tried any of these products? What's new in your beauty stash?
