Summer Base, Sorted
It seems that I have truly developed a soft spot for lightweight bases. Ever since reading
's review on the Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water, I was intrigued by the idea of a weightless, water-like foundation, and so the search began. As Smashbox, much like many other covetable brands, isn't available in my homeland, I searched high and low for any alternatives, eventually stumbling upon a site, which hailed
MAC's Waterweight foundation
as an exact dupe for the BB Water. While I can't comment on similarities between the two, here are my two cents on the latest MAC foundation drop.
Keeping with the 'naked face' trend, this foundation sits comfortably between a light base and a tinted moisturiser, giving just enough coverage to conceal redness and even out the skin tone for a fresh and healthy look. It can be easily layered over any problem areas, however a good concealer will be needed to mask any stubborn blemishes or intense hyperpigmentation. As the name suggests, the foundation is quite fluid and water-like, so the nifty little dropper comes in handy to keep the messiness to a minimum and give more control over the amount of product used. What truly sets this foundation apart from other lightweight bases is the finish - it's semi-matte yet virtually undetectable, flawlessly mimicking the texture of the skin. Similarly to Nars Sheer Glow, it has some luminosity to it, however it's far from being labelled 'glowy' or 'dewy'.
I've trialled it for the better half of the month, and so far I haven't experienced any midday makeup meltdowns, even under less favourable weather conditions. It doesn't migrate or separate, though a touch of powder might be required for those with oily skin. The built-in SPF 30 is a definite plus on a day-to-day basis, however, as with all SPF-heavy products, a double cleanse in the evening is very much needed to remove any trace of the product.
All in all, this foundation has become my new season base of choice, as the longevity and slight mattifying abilities are a welcome addition on busy days spent under the scorching summer sun.
